History

San Liberato is a precious corner of the territory of San Ginesio in the Sibillini Mountains Park.
It is special from a landscape point of view and even more special from an evocative point of view. An unreal atmosphere of Franciscan serenity and peace hovers unchanged in this holy place, as if time had stood still respectfully at the edge of the woods that surround it and hide it from view. Going up the coast of the mountain a little, you reach a plateau that seems to cross over into the sky. They are the Prati di San Liberato. In proximity, among the blue transparencies of the mountains, you can see the town of Monastero, ancient hermitage of the Benedictines or Camaldolesi, and the suggestive gorge from which they still rise “arrogant” the remains of the Castle of Rocca Colonnalta. From there in one shot d’ eye dominates the whole Marca
to the sea.

The Convent of San Liberato was founded on the slopes of Monteragnolo in’ year 1274 by the Lords of Brunforte. The remains of the Blessed Liberato da Loro were transferred to this convent, embraced the rule of S.. Francesco d'Assisi, he had retired in penance until his death in’ hermitage of Soffiano. The new church was called S. Liberato and the Beati Fra were also buried in this church' Humble and Fra' Pacifico, the two friars companions of the Saint, protagonists of two chapters of the Fioretti of S. Francesco.

Nell’ year 1330 the Brunforte family sold the mountain of Monteragnolo and its surroundings to the Sanginesina community, and so this convent became the property of the Municipality of San Ginesio, who over the centuries always took special care of it. The Friars Minor of the Lauretana Province currently reside there.
