History

A little gem in the Cistercian circuit of the Fiastra valley, nestled in the sweet hilly area of ​​San Ginesio. You meet her suddenly along the Via Picena, towards Macerata, wrapped in a belt of dissonant and harmonious greens.

The first news of this Benedictine abbey, most likely founded before the year 1000, It dates back to 1171. San Ginesio bought it in his territory in 1252. The Benedictines left and returned several times. In those spaces of time, the abbey was given to various cardinals as a benefit, while the care of souls was first entrusted to the church of San Michele di Ripe San Ginesio, then to the parish priest of San Gregorio inside the walls of San Ginesio.

The complex, completely renovated in the seventeenth century, in the facade and in the hall it shows the signs of that alteration. However, the charm of the splendid crypt remains intact, for the construction of which the Monks admirably re-employed also waste materials from the nearby Roman city of Urbs Salvia.
